Crowborough is one of the largest inland towns in East Sussex and one of the county's highest points. It is easily reached from London by railway on Southern; a regular bus network connects Crowborough with other towns and villages in Wealden and visitors can also visit the coastal resorts of Eastbourne and Brighton. Crowborough is situated on the edge of Ashdown Forest in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where horse riding and walking are among some of the leisure activities to enjoy. It is also best known for its famous resident Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creator of Sherlock Holmes

The nearby Ashdown Forest was the inspiration for the Winnie the Pooh stories and the Victorian English nature writer Richard Jeffries was also inspired to write several essays based around Sussex whilst living in Crowborough in the late 1880s.

Crowborough Beacon Golf Club and the Boars Head Golf Centre are among the best golfing experiences in the south with beautifully designed courses in picturesque settings.

Crowborough and the surrounding area is home to a diverse number of attractions. Everything from enchanted forests at Groombridge Place to steam railways at Spa Valley and The Bluebell Railway.

If you like outdoor pursuits you will find Bowles Outdoor Centre and Nuts 4 Climbing. There is also Bewl Water which offers many types of watersports and activities, ideal for families and within half an hour's distance.

Crowborough Freedom Leisure Centre has great facilities including a large swimming pool and gym.

Tennis, golf and walking are among popular outdoor activities; Crowborough Country Park is easily accessible from Crowborough Hill. You will find sixteen acre local nature reserve, a perfect place for a peaceful walk or a family picnic. An undulating circular stone track meanders through the site amongst tall trees, ponds and a picnic area. The deep rocky gorge is a main feature of the site.

Crowborough is ideally located for visiting the Ashdown Forest which is at the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has national and international protection because of its wildlife. Nearly two thirds of its 6500 acres are heathland, amounting to 2.5% of the UK's extent of this rare habitat.

Get Immersed...

Crowborough has proud links to some famous names from Britain's past and a visit to the bronze statue of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a must. The poet Minnie Louise Haskins also lived in the town.

Also look out for connections to Roland Penrose, Rudyard Kipling, AA Milne and Virginia Woolf.
