Polegate

Polegate is a small market town in the south of the district, located five miles to the north of Eastbourne with views over the magnificent South Downs. It has its own station and is easily accessible from London on the Southern line with additional access to the coast by rail or bus.

The famous white cliffs, the Seven Sisters lie to the west and are a nationally iconic stretch of coastline within the South Downs National Park which is within easy access from Polegate.

For visitors interested in walking, cycling or horse riding, the Cuckoo Trail starts in Polegate, heading north through the Sussex countryside finishing at Heathfield and is just one of the opportunities for walking and cycling in the area.

The famous herbalist Nicholas Culpeper lived in Polegate's neighbour, the village of Folkington, in the 1600s. He was an apprentice to the local apothecary and claimed to be a 'student of physic and healing'. In 1640 he was well known for his lectures and his book known as The Complete Herbal.

Shop and dine well in Polegate

The Shop and Dine Well in Wealden campaign was first launched in September 2020 by Wealden District Council. The first phase of the campaign was funded via the national ‘Re-opening High Streets Safely Fund’ and focused on supporting Wealden high streets and shopping areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second phase of the campaign commenced in July 2021 and will continue to at least March 2022. Activity is focused on encouraging residents to continue to ‘buy locally’ and support local Wealden businesses including our high streets and local farmers’ markets and craft fairs. A wide-ranging marketing campaign is underway to encourage visitors to our town and village centres and support independent businesses.
