About
Herstmonceux Castle is a 15th-century moated estate, set within more than 600 acres of gardens, woodland, and wildflower meadows. Known for its distinctive red brick construction, the castle was commissioned in 1441 by Sir Roger Fiennes, Treasurer to the Household of Henry VI. Following a recent renovation in 2025, it continues to stand proudly at the heart of the estate, surrounded by eight beautifully curated gardens.
Visitors can wander through their many gardens – such as the Elizabethan Garden and Long Border – and explore their wilder areas including Chestnut Avenue and Wildflower Meadow.
The estate also includes a rope maze and children’s play area, along with a café offering views of the castle and a farm shop stocked with local produce and goods. For those wishing to extend their visit, accommodation is available on-site at Bader Hall.
Herstmonceux Castle is home to an international study centre for Queen’s University, Canada. While it operates as a working academic site, the gardens and grounds remain open to visitors throughout the season. Guided tours of the castle interior run on selected days – please check their website for more information.
