Perfectly nestled on the banks of the Cuckmere River and within the beauty of the South Downs National Park, Alfriston is a popular stop-off for walkers and cyclists alike – with plenty of cafés, pubs, and independent shops lining its medieval high street. But spend the night here and you’ll uncover a unique heritage and cultural scene; all tucked within the picturesque Sussex countryside.
Most likely settled during the Saxon period, the village remains distinctively medieval. Visit the 1300s church nicknamed the Cathedral of the South Downs, the market cross – the only one of its kind in East Sussex – and the 14th-century Clergy House, the first property ever acquired by the National Trust. Head a little further out to find Lullington Church, one of the smallest churches in the country.
Now a popular meeting point on the South Downs Way, Alfriston has long been a place of refuge. Perfectly placed between Battle Abbey and Chichester Cathedral, the village became a stopover for pilgrims in the 1300s. To retrace their steps, head to The Star Inn; originally built in the Middle Ages as a religious hostel, it became an inn in the 16th century. Just along from The Star, The Smugglers Inn tells Alfriston’s darker history: former owner Stanton Collins was a notorious smuggler, who led a gang in the village.
Alfriston’s natural beauty has long inspired creatives – from art-house actor and author Dirk Bogarde, who stayed here several times, to Eleanor Farjeon, who wrote the popular hymn Morning Has Broken based on the village. Its more atmospheric side has also influenced thriller and crime literature: author Peter Cheyney often referenced Alfriston, while Victor Canning’s prologue for The Hidden Face (1956) was set here. The National Trust’s walking trail for the Bloomsbury Group also begins in Alfriston.
Today, Alfriston hosts a number of galleries and antique shops that give it its artistic flair. Alfriston is a haven for history lovers; discover the National Trust Clergy House before visiting the surrounding medieval churches. Looking for some family fun? The country’s best small zoo, Drusillas Park, is just a few minutes from the village centre. Venture a little further and the choice is endless: head south to explore the natural beauty of the South Downs National Park, or north to the well-loved attractions of Michelham Priory and Knockhatch Adventure Park.
For a small medieval village, Alfriston certainly packs a punch when it comes to high street shops you can browse for hours. From the unchanged Village Store – on a site that’s had a shop since as far back as 1406 – to new businesses like Seed and Leaf, Alfriston is a treasure trove of independent shops with unusual finds. The nationally loved bookshop Much Ado was named one of the UK’s best browsable bookshops by The Times in 2024.
Much like its shopping, Alfriston’s food scene doesn’t disappoint. The world-class Star Inn offers an outstanding menu full of local produce, while The Single Kettle and The Gun Inn are perfect for a cuppa or afternoon tea. The Smugglers Inn still goes strong, while The George Inn and Six Bells add to Alfriston’s lively atmosphere.
Just outside the village centre, you’ll find some of the world’s finest English sparkling wines at the single-site Sussex vineyard, Rathfinny Estate. Tours and tastings are available year-round, and to save yourself designating a driver, why not stay in their Flint Barns or self-catered cottage? (Although who needs a kitchen when you’ve got wine?)
As a much-loved base for the South Downs Way, Alfriston offers a variety of accommodation to suit all needs. For luxury, book a stay at Alex Polizzi’s Star Inn or the newly renovated The Alfriston. Stunning hotels and B&Bs like Wingrove House make up the rest of the village, while nearby Alfriston Woodland Cabins offer a peaceful getaway in the foothills of the Downs.
